Tzedakah, meaning righteousness, is a fundamental concept tought by Jewish spiritual leaders. It manifests itself most effectively as spontaneous and anonymous acts or sporadic giving and kindness. As a Jew and a philanthropist, this idea has become increasingly interesting to me as a matter of daily practice. In practice, I personally subscribe to the belief in ma'aser kesafim, as do many of my peers and contemporaries. We understand this religious mandate to mean that approxiamtely one tenth of one's income should go to support those in need. By giving to organizations that pursue projects with Jewish values, we can use our spirituality and donations to ensure that goodness and happiness are spead in this world in a way that encourages others to join us in this form of giving.
